National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul (MMCA Seoul): Art, Autumn & a Little Matcha Break

@

Visit MMCA Seoul in autumn for contemporary art, golden foliage, and a refreshing O’sulloc Jeju green tea and matcha break during a day in Seoul here.

I visited the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul (MMCA Seoul) during autumn, which made the visit feel even more special. The museum itself has a very modern, spacious feel, but what I really enjoyed was the contrast between the contemporary art inside and the golden foliage outside.

I spent some time going through a few of the exhibitions, taking in the installations and different pieces along the way. And after exploring the museum, I ended the visit with something I can never really say no to — a cup of Jeju green tea/matcha from O'sulloc.

Exploring MMCA Seoul

The Seoul branch of MMCA is located in Jongno, right in the middle of one of my favorite areas of Seoul to explore.

The museum has a very spacious, modern design, with courtyards and open areas connecting different parts of the complex. Outside, the architecture feels clean and understated, which makes the autumn trees stand out even more.

This was one of those places where I didn't feel like I had to rush from one thing to another. I could walk through the museum, stop at an exhibition, wander around the open spaces and then continue exploring.

The Seoul branch is also directly across from the Gyeongbokgung Palace area, so it's easy to include in a larger Jongno itinerary.

Inside the Exhibitions

I went through a few of the exhibitions during my visit, and the photos really only show a small part of what was inside.

There were installations, paintings, multimedia pieces, and rooms that were completely different from one another. Some spaces were very minimal, while others were much more immersive.

One of the things I liked about visiting a contemporary art museum is that you don't necessarily have to understand every piece immediately.

Sometimes you just walk into a room, look around, and see what catches your attention.

I also liked the way the museum's large open spaces allowed some of the artwork to really breathe.

There was plenty of room between pieces, and the architecture itself became part of the experience.

MMCA Seoul focuses on modern and contemporary art and also has facilities such as a library, theater, and multipurpose spaces.

Autumn Around the Museum

The museum is beautiful on its own, but visiting during autumn gave the whole place a different atmosphere.

The photos I took outside show the golden foliage against the museum's modern architecture, which I really liked. The combination of the clean lines of the buildings, glass, open courtyards and autumn trees made the exterior just as interesting to photograph as some of the exhibits inside.

There were also quiet corners where you could simply stop and look around.

I think this is one of those places that works well regardless of the season, but there's something about seeing the trees turn golden against a contemporary museum that makes autumn particularly photogenic.

Ending With O'sulloc Matcha

After spending time inside the museum, I ended my visit with a little tea break at O'sulloc Tea House, MMCA Seoul.

And naturally, I went for the green tea/matcha grown and sourced from the O'ssuloc Matcha farm in Jeju.

O'sulloc actually has a tea house located within MMCA Seoul, so you don't have to go somewhere else just to get your matcha fix after visiting the exhibitions.

The official O'sulloc listing describes the MMCA Seoul location as a space combining tea culture with the museum's art experience, and it specifically features matcha-focused drinks.

For me, it was a pretty nice way to end the museum visit — a little caffeine, something green tea-based, and a chance to sit down after walking through the exhibitions.

HOW TO GET THERE

Here's some practical information if you're visiting MMCA Seoul for the first time.

Location:

National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul
30 Samcheong-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea

The easiest option is Anguk Station on Line 3.

From Anguk Station Exit 1, MMCA Seoul is approximately a 10-minute walk. Seoul's official travel guide lists the museum at around 764 meters from the station.

You can also access the area from Gwanghwamun Station on Line 5, Exit 2.

Pair It With Other Seoul Spots

Because MMCA Seoul is in Jongno, it's easy to combine with other nearby places such as Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon Hanok Village and Samcheong-dong.

If you're planning a full day around this part of Seoul, I'd recommend leaving enough time to actually explore the museum rather than squeezing it into a quick stop.

Museum Hours

MMCA Seoul currently operates 10:00 AM–6:00 PM on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, with extended hours until 9:00 PM on Wednesday and Saturday. Last entry is one hour before closing.

Exhibition fees can vary, so it's worth checking the official MMCA Seoul website for the exhibitions running during your visit.

TIPS

1. Check the exhibitions before going.
MMCA has rotating exhibitions, so what you'll see will depend on when you visit.

2. Give yourself a few hours.
There's more to see than just the main galleries, so I wouldn't treat this as a quick photo stop.

3. Don't skip the outdoor areas.
The architecture and courtyards are worth exploring too, especially when the trees are changing colors.

4. Go for O'sulloc after the exhibitions.
The MMCA branch makes it very easy to end your museum visit with a Jeju green tea or matcha drink.

5. Combine it with Jongno.
MMCA's location makes it easy to build a whole day around Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, Samcheong-dong and the surrounding streets.

My Take

I liked how this visit gave me a little bit of everything I enjoy about Seoul — art, architecture, autumn scenery and, of course, matcha.

MMCA Seoul was interesting enough to spend a few hours exploring, but I also enjoyed the quieter moments in between the exhibitions, especially being outside and seeing the golden foliage against the museum's modern architecture.

And ending the afternoon with O'sulloc was honestly a pretty perfect way to finish the visit.
