Returning to Yiwu, discovering Guangzhou, and making the most of a few hours outside work.
About a year after my first work trip to China, I found myself back again for another business trip. This time, we returned to Yiwu and also visited Guangzhou, a new destination for me.
I've always enjoyed traveling, but business trips have a different rhythm. There's a schedule to follow, work to get done, and not always enough time to explore a destination the way I would on a proper holiday.
Still, I always try to make the most of whatever free time I get.
And that's exactly what these photos are about: little glimpses of Guangzhou after work, walking along its commercial streets, checking out some shopping finds, enjoying a meal, and seeing the city light up at night.
These aren't the usual tourist attractions or a full Guangzhou itinerary. Just a few snapshots from a work trip years ago, and the little things I wanted to remember.

Back in China, a New City to Explore
The first photo in this set is a little reminder of how far these work trips took me.
After visiting China for work the year before, I was back again, this time with Guangzhou added to the itinerary alongside Yiwu.
I find it interesting how returning to a country can feel familiar and completely new at the same time. I already had a little experience traveling around China from my previous trip, but Guangzhou was somewhere different for me.
And while the main reason for being there was still work, I was happy to get a chance to see a little more of the city outside the usual work schedule.
I've always been the type to take photos of whatever catches my attention when I'm traveling. Sometimes it's a famous landmark, but other times it's just a street, an interesting building, or something I happen to see while walking around.
These Guangzhou photos are very much the latter.
A Little Walk Around Guangzhou
One of the things I liked about these photos is how they capture the everyday side of Guangzhou.
The streets are lined with commercial buildings and storefronts, with taller buildings rising in the background. There's a mix of modern city architecture and smaller shops along the road, which makes the streets interesting to look at.
I also love the photo of the little dog being walked along the pavement. It's such an ordinary moment, but those are often the photos I end up liking the most when I look back at a trip.
You can travel somewhere for business, spend most of your day indoors, and still catch a glimpse of everyday life just by stepping outside.
It's a little reminder that there's always more to a city than the places listed in travel guides.
And for anyone visiting Guangzhou for work, even a short walk after your meetings can be a nice way to get a feel for the city.
A Little Taste of Guangzhou
Of course, no travel diary of mine would be complete without a little food!
I always enjoy trying food when I travel, even when I don't have time to plan a proper food crawl.
Guangzhou is in Guangdong province, home to Cantonese cuisine, which is known for its wide variety of dishes, dim sum, and regional specialties.
And although I didn't document a full restaurant review or a list of everything we ate, these photos are a nice reminder that food is always part of the travel experience for me.
Sometimes, it's a memorable restaurant. Sometimes, it's just a meal after work and a dessert to end the day.
Either way, I'm always happy to have a food photo to look back on.
Shopping Finds and Little Discoveries
This colorful display of shoes was another thing that caught my attention.
I love browsing shops and markets when I travel, especially in cities where you come across products and displays that look a little different from what you'd usually see at home.
Guangzhou is known for its commercial and wholesale shopping areas, including footwear and apparel markets. If shopping is part of your itinerary, it's worth checking the exact market and its location before heading out, as different districts specialize in different products.
Guangzhou After Dark
I always love seeing a city at night, and Guangzhou was no exception.
The nighttime photos are some of my favorites from this set. The illuminated buildings, colorful lights, and glowing streets give the city a completely different look from the daytime photos.
It's a different kind of travel memory from the usual daytime sightseeing photos, but I think it captures the feeling of being in a big city after a full day of work.
Guangzhou is a large city, and there are plenty of places to see its skyline, including around the Pearl River and the Zhujiang New Town area.
This is one of the things I enjoy about traveling for work: even when you don't have a full day to explore, you can still catch a glimpse of a destination's personality after the sun goes down.

The city's main international airport is north of downtown Guangzhou. You can take the airport metro connection, arrange a taxi, or book a transfer to your hotel.
Getting around the city
Guangzhou has an extensive metro network connecting major city districts, railway stations, and the airport. Check the current metro map and station exits before heading out, especially if you're exploring between work commitments.
Getting around after work
If you only have a few hours, focus on places close to your hotel or workplace instead of trying to cross the entire city. Guangzhou is a large city, and traffic can affect travel times.

TRAVEL TIPS FOR VISITING GUANGZHOU
If you're planning a trip (whether a personal or a work trip) to Guangzhou, whether for business or leisure, here are a few practical things worth knowing.
1. Check your hotel location against your work or sightseeing itinerary
Guangzhou is a large city, so choosing a hotel close to your workplace, shopping districts, or planned attractions can save you considerable travel time. If you're visiting for business, check the distance to your meetings and nearby metro stations before booking.
2. Save your hotel address offline
Keep your hotel's Chinese address, booking confirmation, and contact details accessible on your phone. Having the address ready to show taxi drivers or use with local navigation apps can make getting around much easier.
3. Plan airport and railway transfers ahead
Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is located outside the city center, so factor in transfer time when planning your arrival. Check current metro routes, taxi options, or private transfers to your hotel. If you're arriving by high-speed train, double-check which Guangzhou railway station is listed on your ticket, as the city has multiple stations.
4. Leave room for some downtime
If you're combining business with travel, don't underestimate the value of a comfortable hotel and a little time to unwind. I always appreciate having some downtime after a full day of work, even if it's just a quick walk around the neighborhood, a good meal, or enjoying the city lights before calling it a night.

My Take
Looking back at this trip, it's nice to see how much I managed to capture even with a work schedule to follow.
I got to return to Yiwu after about a year, experience another part of China in Guangzhou, and collect a few more travel memories along the way.
From the city streets and shopping displays to the food and nighttime skyline, these are the little moments that make me appreciate traveling, even when it's not a vacation.
I may not have a complete itinerary or detailed reviews of every place we visited, but I still love sharing these snapshots. Sometimes, the best travel stories are simply the ones that remind you of being somewhere new, even if only for a little while.
And hopefully, these photos inspire you to leave a little room for exploring on your own next business trip, too.
